What Is Teeth Whitening?

In a world where your appearance matters, the state of your smile can be a major cosmetic concern. Fortunately, Contemporary Dentistry is able to help you address this dilemma with professional-strength teeth whitening. While there are tons of grocery store whitening choices, the product we use has shown to be superior to most over-the-counter remedies currently offered. Our whitening treatments, highly recommended by our leading dentists, can whiten your teeth by quite a few shades, helping you keep your amazing results for much longer than alternative products. We use professional-strength solutions that actually work, reaching below the surface of the teeth to treat deep stains, rather than consumer-level options that just scrape the surface (quite literally) and provide a brighter hue of yellow at the very best.

What Are the Benefits of Teeth Whitening?

Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Almost anyone can benefit from professional teeth whitening to restore a brighter, more beautiful smile. Patients with surface stains, dull teeth, yellowing of the teeth, and even deeper-set stains from smoking, certain medications, and underlying conditions may be considered suitable candidates for teeth whitening. In general, patients considering teeth whitening should have good overall dental and oral health with no active infections or other oral conditions. It's also important to note that dental restorations - like crowns or bridges - cannot be whitened using professional teeth whitening, which works best on natural teeth.

What to Expect During Teeth Whitening

What you should expect for teeth whitening appointments depends on the process recommended by our dental professionals. Since our practice provides several treatments for effective and high-quality teeth whitening, the procedure selected for you will be determined after an appointment where your aesthetic goals and lifestyle will be discussed and taken into consideration. In the majority of situations, your professional teeth whitening treatments will be completed in less than an hour through the use of a prescription-strength whitening gel, combined with the help of a light system that immediately whitens teeth several shades. Our at-home systems are equally efficient but may provide a more subtle result over a period of months.

Great experience. Open on Saturday. Dr. Maya Vexler DDS was fantastic and did a great job with my dental crown, very confident and nice. I plan on switching to Contemporary Dentistry. The whole team made me feel very comfortable and safe.

UPDATE: January 2024. My 6th year with Dr. Morales. Had another cleaning. As usual, great experience. I don't have insurance, so I am happy they still honor Aetna's discount membership for real savings. Started to learn Spanish and I can practice it in real life...and for free! Hasta la proxima vez ! UPDATE: January 2023. Just had the cleaning done, after five years still a satisfied customer. This is my second review for this excellent office. After neglecting my teeth for quite some time a broken toothed forced me to visit a dentist. After a research on the web and subsequent phone calls I settled for the Contemporary Dentistry of Manassas. One of the reason was that not having insurance the office accepts Aetna Savings Plans, basically a discount for the services. The discounts are real as I found out calling some other offices. My first visit was in January 2018. I have had numerous procedures done since then (altogether 30 - thirty - visits) ranging from deep cleaning, numerous cavities and including one implant and two crowns. All work was done in the office, the quality of work has been 100%+, I have never experienced nay 'post-procedure' pains or complications. The staff is very friendly and I am very happy I picked Contemporary dentistry for my dental needs. UPDATE: January 2023. Just had the cleaning done, after five years still a satisfied customer.

My family and I have been patients of Dr. Morales and his practice for 18 years. The time period, alone, should be an indication of my family’s satisfaction.  Dr. Morales is wonderful...he invariably demonstrates serving his patients’ best interests and well-being in recommending and carrying out treatment. We have never had lingering issues in any treatment given.  We have successfully recommended him and his practice and will continue to do so. We never have a problem with scheduling appointments and the office staff is always welcoming and pleasant. The office, itself, is modern and comfortable.  If I could give 10 Stars, I would! P.S. Love our hygienist, Amy.

I’ve had a very positive experience with Contemporary Dentistry of Fairfax starting with my initial phone call to make my appointment, to the welcoming and professional office staff, and the talent and skill of the dentists. I currently see Dr Noumy but I trust that I would get the same care from the other dentists as well.

I travel from Florida for Dentist Diego Morales.  He is super careful and I don’t have any pain.  Excellent work in my mouth.  Dentist Diego Morales treats you like part of his family.  No waiting times when you have an appointment.  The receptionist and the staff very attentive.  I recommended 100%.

What Should I Expect After A Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Following either session, you may experience sensitivity to hot or cold food and beverages, but this should dissipate within a few days. Just like all dental procedures, routine dental examinations with our dental team at Contemporary Dentistry are highly recommended and imperative to preserving results. These examinations will assess everything from gum tissue health to the condition of each tooth. When the main procedure is finished, we generally advise returning for touch-ups a couple of times annually and twice-yearly cleanings to benefit your oral health. Remember that just because your teeth are white doesn't necessarily mean they are in perfect health. That's why routine examinations are still necessary. You will also be provided careful instructions regarding what food should and should not be consumed in the future, such as red wine and coffee.

In case you've been contemplating a teeth whitening regimen but are not sure whether over-the-counter or professional options are the appropriate answer, we urge you to schedule a consultation with our team in Fairfax, VA or Manassas, VA to go over the benefits and disadvantages of each procedure before you make your decision.

Will teeth whitening make my teeth more sensitive?

It is normal to experience some increased sensitivity following teeth whitening treatments, but this should resolve on its own within a few days or weeks. During this time, patients may benefit by avoiding hot, cold, or sugary foods and drinks. Patients who already have noticeable tooth sensitivity may not be considered good candidates for teeth whitening, as the sensitivity can be exacerbated by treatment in some cases.

How many shades whiter can my teeth get with a whitening treatment?

Teeth whitening results will vary from person to person based on the nature, age, and severity of the tooth discoloration and other factors. In many cases, it is possible to achieve results up to eight shades whiter with professional teeth whitening!

Can my veneers be whitened?

Porcelain veneers and other dental restorations typically do not respond to teeth whitening treatments the way that natural teeth do. Fortunately, these restorations are remarkably stain-resistant, but it is still important to avoid staining foods and beverages to keep your veneers, crowns, and other restorations looking their best.

Can I brush my teeth after in-office whitening?

Our dentists do not recommend brushing your teeth directly after in-office whitening treatment. Your teeth may be more sensitive than normal for a few hours after your treatment. Contact our team to have more questions answered.

Will whitening my teeth damage my enamel?

The in-office whitening treatments offered in our office are formulated with high-quality products. Our dental team works diligently to ensure that your teeth won't suffer damage when you undergo whitening treatment. However, it is important to have any necessary dental work completed before a whitening procedure is scheduled. Schedule an appointment to have all of your questions answered.

How does age affect teeth whitening?

Teeth naturally darken with age due to thinning enamel and deeper stains. While whitening can improve discoloration, older individuals may need more treatments or alternative solutions for the best results.
